Finally my timetable is out! No off days sadly:( Thursday is probably the crappiest day because I have to wake up at 5am to do the dreaded swim programme followed by a short 1hr breakfast and then 6hrs of lectures before I end the day with another 2nd gym session. At least the other days are pretty manageable. Another crappy fact is that I fun know anyone for the Geog ss module. Which means I have to put in the effort to make some friends. Not something fun when everyday is already so tiring.

Going back to school

Tomorrow signifies the end of 8months as a 'professional' kayaker. To tell the truth, I'm actually dreading juggling studying and kayaking again. During those 8months leading up to the sea games, I really had enough rest, focus and motivation to ensure I could be at my best for the games. I'm someone that likes to be good at the things I do and I hate it when I can only manage sub standard work because there's not enough hours in a day. It also doesnt help that I'm an avid believer in having a minimum of 8 hrs sleep a day and that one cannot just work and have no play. Anyway I'll have to find a way through this once again and do my best to get my grades up. Reflecting on last year, it was really tough. Had many problems even before the year began, had a nasty bike accident that ruined my racing season and also the final triumph at the games itself. Training camp was probably the phase that I had found my fire and motivation back after the accident left me in a horrible physical state. And the many other emotional problems and doubts throughout the year strengthened my self belief immensely. There were many times I felt I was fighting a one man show because even my own team mates don't seem to understand what I feel. I hope I will be able to continue growing and learning from my mistakes. And one day I will be able to say I've been there and done that and when that day comes, I'll stop and I'll rest and enjoy.

Hello!

The XXVI edition of the South East Asian Games is right around the corner! I've been training up to 12 sessions a week, training about 2-3hrs each session and all that hard work alone isn't enough if the body is not supplied with the right nutrition to repair and rebuild the muscles. Right now to ensure that i do not end up burning out in these final weeks leading up to the games, pronutrition has stepped in to ensure that the Team Singapore Sprint Kayak Team has the necessary support to ensure maximal benefits from trainings in order to bring back outstanding results in November. Hi,

I just returned from jatiluhur after 12 days of pretty tough training. The place was pretty nice, they had great facilities like a huge gym and nice big boat shed. The indonesians were really friendly and they even let us use the nelo boats that are meant for the actual games. The hotel was great. The only thing was that the food was something of concern as quite afew of the team had some form of stomach problem.

I think i had a solid 1 + weeks of training there, did a PB in k1 1000m on the final day of training. Now i just have to keep getting stronger and faster for the remaining weeks and preparation will be perfect for the games!

Hope to be back there soon !

Flying off to Indo on tuesday morning for 10 day stint of hard training. Training has been going quite well recently and i'm feeling the improvement to technique and fitness. Also made some changes to the k4 seating, now i'm going to be racing in the 2nd seat. it feels alot more powerful and hopefully speed is even faster than the best we did this year.

World-record holder Adam van Koeverden has been running long before he ever picked up a paddle and intends to continue long after he’s retired from international competition. And when he runs, he runs hard. And also pretty fast for a guy who, out of necessity, doesn’t exactly have a runner’s build. So if you’re running in Algonquin Park or on the streets of Toronto and you hear approaching footsteps, you just might be on the verge of being passed by a three-time Olympic medallist.

Why do I like running? Because it’s there, I suppose. Because it’s within my grasp. The same reason why I like doing everything that I do that’s active: mountain-biking, kayaking, running, cross-country skiing. Because it’s not going to get done if you don’t do it.

I’ve been a runner longer than I’ve been a kayaker. I ran cross-country in 1994 in elementary school. But I really wasn’t an athlete until I was 13 or 14. I was a pretty lazy kid. At a certain point in my life, I decided I wasn’t being productive and all that time spent in front of the television was a waste and I wanted to change that.

I fell into kayaking. Right away, I recognized that all the good kayakers in the world and all the good canoers at my club and everybody I was training with were running quite a bit. You can’t be on the water all the time as a kayaker with the weather in Canada; running in the winter is a lot easier than breaking the ice to be in your kayak. I became a serious runner the day I became a serious kayaker.

I remember doing runs in the slush with our coach at the time, Larry Cain, who was an Olympic champion in 1984. This guy’s a legend in my sport, both on and off the water. This is the kind of guy who could run a 10k in 33 minutes and then go bench press 225 pounds 50 times. I’m not even exaggerating. The guy was the fittest guy I’d ever met and running was a big part of his life. I learned how to run with him. I learned how to run hard with him.

When I was in high school, I was running three times a week at school, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And Tuesdays, on my day off from running, I was doing track workouts at another high school. Fridays, I was running 12k in the morning at school and then I was down at the canoe club running with them, another 14 or 15 kilometres at night. And then I would do another one on the weekend because I liked it so much. That’s in addition to all the weight training and kayaking I was doing. Running five times in five days through the week and then a weekend run. Running twice on Fridays was pretty killer, as much as 10k in the morning and 18k at night or something like that.

I’m glad I’m not doing it any more because it’s a lot of kilometres for a guy my weight. But it made me tough. It made me really tough. This was when I was 15 or 16 years old and just plugging away at the kilometres. Racing wasn’t important to me. I would do 5k races just to see how many people I could beat in my age class.

I was touching the 17-minute mark for a 5k. For someone who was 185 pounds, that’s pretty good. I was better at cross-country. I remember lining up in cross-country in high school, looking over and thinking, “These guys are 140.” I was pushing 190.

I still love running and I still run often. I went for a run in Central Park recently when I was in New York for an interview. That was the first time I’d run in Central Park and it was amazing. What a great place to run. I ran for 70 minutes. That’s longer than I usually go but I was looking around and enjoying it.

Whenever I see somebody in front of me, it doesn’t matter how far away they are, I just love chasing them down. I don’t care how fast they are, I want to get in front of them and pass them.

Right now, especially in the fall and winter and spring, it’s part of my training program. But it used to be a bigger part. I’ve isolated that as something that’s probably waned too much in the last couple of seasons. I’m interested in getting it back as a rudimentary part of my program, so I’m not fitting in runs when I can. That’s generally what I’ve been doing for the past few years.

It’s the best aerobic training and the most accessible aerobic training. It might be six 1k efforts, or 10 400 metre efforts or a steady 60 minutes or running on a hill. We do all sorts of stuff. I used to do a lot of track workouts, one or two a week during the off-season. We couple that with all sorts of different kinds of training. It’s always variable. A hard workout’s a hard workout. Anytime your lungs are burning and you’re sweating, you’re going to see a benefit.

I finished the race season in August. We were only running once or twice a week. When I was off training somewhere, I’d run more often because I don’t have other things to do. When I’m in Sweden for three weeks, why not go for a run because I have the time, and there’s a ski hill I saw on the drive in that I’d really like to see how long it takes to get up.

My new favourite place to run is down mountains on scree. But they’re not really that available. Scree running is so cool. You run down the face, it’s like a 45-degree incline. It’s just the accumulated debris from the mountain eroding. So it’s just like pebbles or like parking lot stones. It’s like a metre and a half or two metres deep. You run down the mountain full blast. As long as you’re hitting heel first, you don’t fall on your face. It’s so steep you can’t even walk back up. You bomb down. You get like a thousand vertical feet in five minutes.

I like to run anywhere. Algonquin Park is awesome. Central Park is one of my new favourites. Anywhere in the woods. I went running once in Beijing, it was like 4k. It was like five or six days away from my first race. I just wanted to make sure my legs were still in good shape.

Having the opportunity to run with guys like Simon Whitfield and other triathletes, that’s cool. Just to be able to share that with somebody who’s so good at it. I’m not as fast as him, obviously. But we can run together and catch up.

I will always be a runner. Even if I go a year without training in my kayak, at some point in my life. Running is just so accessible, I’ll always do it. It doesn’t matter where I go, I pack a pair of running shoes. Even if I’m going somewhere for a night, well what if I wake up and want to go for a run? I can’t leave these behind. I’ll always enjoy it and I’ll always live somewhere close to trails and I can always just get on to the trail and give ’er in the trees for a few minutes.

The fastest half-marathon I did was a sub-1:18 and I wanted to die afterward. I love being able to tell people I did a 1:18 half-marathon, but it didn’t feel good. It friggin’ hurt.

I don’t want to do a marathon until I’m sure I can crack three hours. I just don’t want to run for three-and-a-half hours. I’d much rather run fast and be dead. But I’ll have to lose some weight. Towards the end of a half-marathon, it’s starting to hurt a lot in my joints. A 2:45 marathon would be awesome. I’d love to be able to run 2:50. I think that’s within my grasp if I get down to like 170 to 175 weight category. But right now, I’m pushing 200 and it’s not happening. Every step is just too much.

My avidness for running waxes and wanes throughout the year depending on what my other priorities are. But it’s always there. And I always look forward to my next run. I could go on at length about the feeling you get after a run and the high that you feel and the sense of accomplishment that you get for days after. Even if you just did a short one, you just have something to reassure yourself that you’re doing what you should be doing and getting the most out of your day.

I’m a big believer in maximizing one’s day and making sure that from dawn to dusk, you are being productive. I can’t think of anything more productive than exercise. In terms of your health and overall enjoyment of life, I don’t think there’s a better investment.

I look at all of these problems in the financial markets right now, and it sounds like everybody feels it’s a total catastrophe and it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened. From my perspective, the things that are worth enjoying are free. Running shoes aren’t free, but it doesn’t cost anything to get out there and go for a run.

This week has been really tiring for me. 3x2km timetrials, 5x4', 5x2', 5x1' runs,weights, swim and another 6sets timetrial! I managed to do pretty well for the 1000m today and I'm really glad to be able to just laze about and recover from all the fatigue. It's gonna get harder and harder in the next few weeks and I hope I'll be able to do everything well. Now's the time to put in the hard work to reap the benefits later.

I had this funny idea last night and I think I'll try a little experiment. You know how some people just can't remember their dreams? I was thinking that I'll try record mine down just like a log book. Just for fun. ( why is there no enter button for iPod) dream 1- I was at a swimming pool. The place was brightly lit, yellowish glow from the lights. By the looks of things, an indoor pool. I'm surrounded by these swimmer looking people, big and sporty looking and there's an old lady coach in a blue track suit walking around giving instructions. At first we all stand at the normal starting mark but as more people arrive, we are told to swim the breadth of the pool instead. I look around and start thinking to myself " shit I suck at swimming and these guys are gonna kick my ass". I start thinking of all sorts of excuses to get out off the place. The other people start getting into position by the pool and finally I decide I'm going to just give any excuse and not make a fool of myself infront of all these swimmers. So I walk towards the exit and give some excuse to the lady coach and leave. And I felt a feeling I feel at almost all real world swim trainings. Dread. - well, no surprise that was floating around my mind. I really had to go swimming when I woke up. Haha oh well. I'll get better at it hopefully.

Haha I finally got this thing working on my iPod! Amazing little electric nonsense haha! Still, doesn't feel anything like a computer and touch screens can be a huge pain at times. Anyway, wonderful weather today. Roughly 25 degrees all day because of the rain and it's nice respite from the heat :) watched x men the other day and I wondered what life would be like if I could burst into a fireball or fly up to the moon or bend metal into all forms.. What not.. I think life would be a little bit more interesting? More dangerous? And things like studying and sports would be obsolete because there would be people with special crap that makes everything unfair. Hmmm reminds me of that show "beautiful mind" or something. Hi,

Finally i'm back from hungary. Its my 2nd winter training there and i can feel some improvement in strength and technique. Did pretty much the same stuff as the previous year, namely swimming, running (distance), running (sprints), nordic skiing, alot of weights and ergo paddling. Also some new stuff like tree chopping(axe and tree) and some mountain climbing.

It was really cold this year with the average temperature for the day under 0 for many weeks and the air was extremely dry. As usual it took a while to adapt and after that i was quite used to it.

Apart from all the hard work, there was some time to play and fool around as well. Spent some time in Vienna and slovakia and not to mention amsterdam. haha.

Hi,

It's been a crazy weekend of timetrial to try and stay in the national team and i'm filled with so many mixed emotions im not sure where to begin.

Well, the last time i did a good timetrial was in 2007 with toshko just before june ended. I hit my best time of 4.02 for 1000m and 1.50 for 500m. And the feeling of hitting those timings at 18, there are no words that come close to describe it. Okay, its not the fastest ever done by a singaporean, but for me it meant more than anything else in this world.

And then there was IB and army, surgery on my tailbone, seacc08,worldchamps09,acc09,seacc10,worldcup10 and no asian games. A string of shit after shit after shit.

and then there's shit trainings.

and finally, by some miracle this weekend i hit:
1000: 3.59, 4.04
500:1.54, 1.54, 1.49
200: 41.2, 39.8

I cleared every single distance! with 2 personal best times.

I am so grateful for this and even more grateful that i can do this when coach is here. it is all his hard work and without him, i'd still be floundering somewhere trying to get back the form i lost. I am grateful for everything that has happened to me this year and i wouldnt do anything to have it any other way.

I am truly blessed. and i need to say

Taking a break from shakespeare right now. Got a 1k assignment to write up on the tempest and i'll get started on that in just abit :P

You know paddling at kallang does have its benefits? I didnt need to visit a river to do the river habitat survey for Geog because i can safely say i know the whole kallang river by heart! Also managed to finish microbes ppt yesterday night when i decided to burn the midnight oil. My group decided that HFMD was a great idea and i spent the whole night trying to make my part entertaining with weird videos and stuff. will probably look for more before the next meeting.

Also had a pretrial timetrial yesterday. Used the new rotafix seat and i think i really like it? Its like the same shape as the rotating seat but is fixed so its good for my bones that are already dead. Hit 4.10 for 1000m and 40.40 for the 200. Still needs some fine tuning in both distances and i need to learn to relax abit more during the 1000.

I'm really looking forward to racing next year. Guys will have a really strong team :)

Once again my feet end up in this sorry state. Doubt i'll be paddling till it heals up..

Time trials are coming up next weekend. still not as fast as i'd like to be but we'll see how race day goes?

On a side note, its almost 1 month remaining to my finals and i think i'll start studying on monday. haha i no more excuses and crappy reasons, i must study now!

Oh and the other day my dad decided to wash his new boxster. haha he hasnt washed his own car since his first merc so i think he's happy.

Finally have geog out of the way. It looks 10x better than my EE :D Sadly there's still tons of work piling up and clearing it is taking longer than normal :/

Well, i'll try to finish my lit assignment, econs lecture, lit lecture, geog online assessment and do as much readings as i can today.

looks like another weekend at home...

On a side note, paddling is getting better! i can feel my legs moving again somewhat? Will be abit more before i have enough speed.

World champions 2007 K4 200m

I've been watching alot of races recently.

YOG, world champs on eurosport. and every once in awhile i get that "i want to race feeling again".

Especially when watching the world championships on tv.

I remember what made me want to train to go to the olympics was watching the olympic games in athens back in '04 ( eirik larsen's k1 1000m) and after that i trained and trained and trained till i made it as the fastest k1 junior in 07.

And now i get that feeling again.

i have been to quite afew internationals now and ive missed alot more too.
And now with my recent failure to get to the asian games again put together with my 10 days off,

i think im finding my way back into this sport and the chase for excellence.

Army has come and gone and i've lost touch with some paddling technique and killer instinct, but come next year under coach's guidance. i'll hit that 75kg min. weight mark, gain more muscle strength and shave those seconds off my time in head wind!

The road to winning the SEA games and doing well at the Asian olympic qualification starts now!
